The KHANG PHARMACY Standard: How We Select Every Product We Carry

By DAI TRAN, PharmD, MBA | CEO & Founder, KHANG PHARMACY

When patients walk into KHANG PHARMACY — online or in person — they often ask us: "How do you decide what to carry?" It's one of the most important questions anyone can ask a pharmacist. And the answer reflects everything we stand for.

The supplement industry is largely unregulated. Unlike prescription medications, dietary supplements do not require FDA approval before they reach store shelves. That means the burden of quality assurance falls entirely on the retailer — and on you, the consumer. At KHANG PHARMACY, we take that responsibility seriously. Every product we carry has passed through a rigorous, pharmacist-led evaluation process before it ever reaches our catalog.

Here is exactly how we do it.

Step 1: Clinical Evidence Review

The first question we ask about any product is simple: What does the science say?

We require peer-reviewed, published clinical evidence — ideally human randomized controlled trials — before we consider carrying a product. We look for:

  • Studies published in indexed, peer-reviewed journals (PubMed, JAMA, NEJM, etc.)
  • Human clinical trials, not just animal or in-vitro studies
  • Clinically meaningful doses — not token amounts included for label marketing
  • Consistency of results across multiple independent studies
  • Transparent disclosure of funding sources and conflicts of interest

If a product's claims are not supported by credible clinical evidence, it does not make it past this stage — regardless of how popular or well-marketed it is.

Step 2: Manufacturing Standards Verification

Even the best-formulated supplement is worthless if it isn't manufactured properly. We evaluate every brand's manufacturing practices against pharmaceutical-grade standards:

  • NSF International Certification — independent verification that what's on the label is in the bottle
  • cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) — FDA-mandated manufacturing standards for dietary supplements
  • Third-party testing — independent lab verification of identity, potency, and purity
  • USP Verification — United States Pharmacopeia standards for supplement quality
  • Banned substance testing — particularly important for athletes and patients on complex medication regimens

We will not carry a product from a manufacturer that cannot demonstrate rigorous quality controls, regardless of how compelling the clinical data may be.

Step 3: Ingredient Form & Bioavailability Assessment

This is where pharmacist expertise makes the biggest difference. Many supplements use cheap, inactive forms of nutrients that the body cannot properly absorb or utilize. We evaluate:

  • Active vs. inactive forms — e.g., methylfolate vs. folic acid; methylcobalamin vs. cyanocobalamin; magnesium glycinate vs. magnesium oxide
  • Bioavailability data — how much of the active ingredient actually reaches systemic circulation
  • Delivery system — softgels vs. capsules vs. tablets vs. liposomal formulations, and which is most appropriate for each compound
  • Synergistic cofactors — whether the formula includes the supporting nutrients needed for optimal absorption and utilization
  • Proprietary blends — we avoid products that hide individual ingredient doses behind proprietary blend labels

Step 4: Label Transparency Audit

We read every label — carefully. We look for:

  • Full disclosure of all ingredients and their exact doses
  • No hidden fillers, artificial colors, or unnecessary additives
  • Accurate health claims that comply with FDA regulations
  • Clear allergen labeling
  • Honest serving size representations

If a brand is not willing to be fully transparent about what's in their product, we are not willing to put our name behind it.

Step 5: Brand Integrity & Track Record

We evaluate the company behind the product, not just the product itself:

  • How long has the brand been in the market?
  • Do they have a history of FDA warning letters or recalls?
  • Do they invest in ongoing research and clinical trials?
  • Are they transparent about their sourcing and supply chain?
  • Do they stand behind their products with meaningful guarantees?

Our Promise

When you purchase from KHANG PHARMACY, you are not buying from a warehouse that stocks whatever sells. You are accessing a pharmacist-curated formulary — the same quality of clinical judgment your physician expects from your prescription, applied to every supplement we carry.

We will never compromise on quality to offer a lower price. We will never carry a product we wouldn't recommend to our own family. And we will always be transparent about why we carry what we carry — and why we don't carry what we don't.

That is the KHANG PHARMACY standard. And it is non-negotiable.
