What Is Vital Nutrients® Vital Brain® Powder?
Vital Brain® Powder is a multi-ingredient cognitive support supplement providing Alpha-GPC (glycerylphosphorylcholine), Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCl (ALC), and Phosphatidylserine (PS) in a powder format. This article reviews the published clinical evidence for each ingredient, clarifies what the research does and does not support, and explains how I discuss this product with patients at Khang Pharmacy.

The Clinical Evidence
1. Alpha-GPC (Glycerylphosphorylcholine) — 600 mg
Alpha-GPC is a choline-containing phospholipid that can cross the blood-brain barrier and contributes to acetylcholine synthesis. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter involved in memory formation, attention, and learning. Alpha-GPC has been studied primarily in populations with cognitive impairment or dementia, and in smaller studies in healthy or athletic adults.
- Alzheimer’s disease: A multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial (De Jesus Moreno Moreno M, PMID: 12637119) evaluated choline alfoscerate (Alpha-GPC) in 261 patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease and reported improvements in several cognitive measures versus placebo over 180 days. Because this was a disease-specific population receiving a studied therapeutic regimen, the findings should not be extrapolated to cognitive enhancement in healthy adults or assumed to apply to the 600-mg dose in Vital Brain® Powder.
- Post-stroke recovery: Several European trials have studied Alpha-GPC in post-ischemic stroke patients for cognitive and functional outcomes, with generally favorable results. These are clinical populations with a documented cholinergic deficit; findings should not be directly extrapolated to healthy adults or to supplement-dose use outside clinical supervision.
- What this does not establish: That Alpha-GPC at 600 mg produces equivalent effects to those observed in Alzheimer’s disease or post-stroke populations, or that cognitive benefits in impaired populations transfer to healthy individuals.
2. Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCl (ALC) — 850 mg
ALC is the acetylated form of L-carnitine and can cross the blood-brain barrier. It participates in mitochondrial fatty acid metabolism, and the acetyl group it carries can contribute to acetylcholine synthesis. ALC has been studied in age-related cognitive decline, depression, and peripheral neuropathy.
- Depression / depressive symptoms: A meta-analysis of 12 RCTs (Veronese N et al., PMID: 29076953) found that ALC supplementation significantly reduced depressive symptoms compared to placebo or active control, with particularly strong effects in older adults and those with dysthymia. The authors noted variable quality across included trials.
- Mild cognitive impairment and age-related cognitive decline: Multiple RCTs and systematic reviews have examined ALC in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or age-related cognitive decline, with generally positive effects on memory and attention measures. Most studies used doses of 1,500–3,000 mg/day; the 850-mg dose in this product is below the most commonly studied range, and whether equivalent clinical benefits are achieved at this dose has not been established.
- Diabetic peripheral neuropathy: Several RCTs demonstrate ALC reduces pain and may improve nerve conduction in diabetic peripheral neuropathy at doses of 1,000–3,000 mg/day. This is a clinical finding in a specific disease population; it does not establish general neuroprotection in healthy adults.
- What this does not establish: That ALC at 850 mg/day produces the same magnitude of effects as doses studied in clinical trials, or that cognitive benefits in impaired populations transfer to healthy adults.
3. Phosphatidylserine (PS) — 150 mg
Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid component of neuronal cell membranes involved in signal transduction and neurotransmitter release. It has one of the more substantial evidence bases among cognitive supplement ingredients, with studies primarily in older adults with age-associated memory impairment.
- Memory and cognitive function in older adults: Multiple double-blind RCTs have demonstrated PS supplementation (typically 300 mg/day) improves memory recall, learning, and concentration in older adults with age-associated memory impairment (Crook TH et al., PMID: 1609044; Cenacchi T et al., PMID: 8437695). The 150-mg dose in this product is below the 300-mg dose most commonly studied; whether equivalent benefits are achieved at this dose has not been established.
- FDA qualified health claim: The FDA permits a qualified health claim for phosphatidylserine and cognitive dysfunction in the elderly, while emphasizing that the supporting scientific evidence is very limited and preliminary. The qualified claim wording reflects this: “Very limited and preliminary scientific research suggests that phosphatidylserine may reduce the risk of cognitive dysfunction in the elderly.” This is a qualified — not a full — health claim, and should not be presented as established evidence of efficacy.
- Cortisol and stress response: Several studies have found PS supplementation blunts the cortisol response to physical stress in exercise settings. Whether this translates to meaningful cognitive benefit under psychological stress has not been firmly established in large trials.
- What this does not establish: That PS at 150 mg produces equivalent effects to the 300-mg doses studied in the key RCTs, or that cognitive benefits in older adults with memory impairment transfer to younger healthy adults.
On Powder Format and Ingredient Combinations
A powder format offers convenience for those who prefer not to take additional capsules and allows for dose flexibility. Whether powder delivery produces meaningfully different absorption kinetics compared to capsules for these specific ingredients has not been established by comparative clinical trials.
Alpha-GPC, ALC, and PS have each been studied independently. They share relevant mechanisms relating to cholinergic neurotransmission and neuronal membrane function, but the specific combination in this product has not been evaluated as a finished formulation in clinical trials. Ingredient-level evidence supports mechanistic plausibility; it does not confirm enhanced clinical outcomes from the combination.
Who May Consider Discussing Vital Brain® Powder?
- Adults over 40 experiencing age-related memory changes who want to discuss evidence-based cognitive support options with their pharmacist or physician
- Individuals with documented mild cognitive impairment, under physician supervision
- Those with high cognitive demands who want to discuss whether nutritional support is appropriate for their situation
- Patients with peripheral neuropathy or post-stroke cognitive deficits, under physician supervision
- Anyone who prefers a powder format for cognitive supplement ingredients
Safety & Medication Considerations
- Cholinergic medications (donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine): Alpha-GPC increases acetylcholine activity. Use with cholinesterase inhibitors may produce additive cholinergic effects. Discuss with your pharmacist or prescriber before combining.
- Anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications: ALC and Alpha-GPC interactions with anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents have been reported in the literature. Consult your pharmacist before use if you are taking warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or similar medications.
- Thyroid disease: Carnitine compounds may affect thyroid hormone activity in some individuals at high doses; discuss with your physician if you have thyroid disease.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Safety has not been established for these ingredients at supplement doses; avoid unless directed by a healthcare provider.
- Gastrointestinal effects: ALC and Alpha-GPC may cause mild GI side effects (nausea, GI upset) at higher doses in some individuals; start at the lower end of the suggested dose range.
Pharmacist’s Note
As a PharmD, I discuss Vital Brain® Powder with patients who are interested in evidence-based cognitive support options. Alpha-GPC at 600 mg has its strongest evidence in Alzheimer’s disease and post-stroke populations in randomized controlled trials; its role in healthy adult cognitive enhancement has not been established in large rigorous trials. ALC at 850 mg/day has a reasonably well-developed evidence base for depressive symptoms in older adults and for peripheral neuropathy — though most efficacy studies used higher doses (1,500–3,000 mg/day). Phosphatidylserine at 150 mg is below the 300-mg dose most commonly studied in the key RCTs for age-associated memory impairment, supported by a FDA qualified health claim that appropriately reflects very limited and preliminary evidence.
I am careful to clarify that the evidence for these ingredients was generated in specific populations at specific doses, and that findings in impaired or elderly populations do not automatically transfer to healthy younger adults.
