What Is Mito Cell PQQ™?

Neurobiologix® Mito Cell PQQ™ is a multi-ingredient mitochondrial support formula combining PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone), CoQ10, NADH, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Resveratrol, Quercetin, Vitamin C, Zinc, and L-Ornithine in a single capsule. It is formulated by Kendal Stewart, MD, and is marketed as a practitioner-grade neurological and mitochondrial support product.

This guide reviews the evidence for the key active ingredients, clarifies what the research does and does not support, and explains how I discuss this formula with patients at Khang Pharmacy.

Key Ingredients & What the Evidence Shows

CoQ10 (Coenzyme Q10)

CoQ10 is an essential electron carrier in the mitochondrial electron transport chain and a fat-soluble antioxidant. It has a substantial human clinical literature, including randomized evidence in chronic heart failure (Q-SYMBIO trial, PMID: 25282031). Evidence for blood pressure lowering is inconsistent across trials. For statin users, statins inhibit the mevalonate pathway shared with CoQ10 biosynthesis; whether CoQ10 supplementation meaningfully reduces statin-associated muscle symptoms is debated, with some trials showing benefit and others not.

HUMAN RCT CoQ10 is the best-characterized ingredient in this formula in terms of human clinical evidence.

PQQ (Pyrroloquinoline Quinone) — BioPQQ®

PQQ is a redox-active compound with demonstrated biological activity in experimental systems. Preclinical research (cell culture, mouse models) has shown activation of PGC-1α and CREB signaling pathways associated with mitochondrial biogenesis. Whether oral PQQ supplementation meaningfully stimulates the creation of new mitochondria in humans has not been established in clinical trials.

In a small placebo-controlled trial (Itoh et al., PMID: 26782228, n=41), PQQ 20mg/day for 12 weeks was associated with improvements in composite cognitive test scores in middle-aged and older adults. The study was small and short-duration.

A human randomized exercise trial (Hwang et al., PMID: 31860387) found that PQQ increased skeletal-muscle PGC-1α protein — a molecular signal consistent with the preclinical mitochondrial-biogenesis hypothesis — but did not improve aerobic exercise performance or body composition compared with placebo.

PRECLINICAL Mitochondrial biogenesis mechanisms are established in preclinical research. HUMAN RCT Human evidence is early and limited to small trials in cognition and one exercise study detecting a molecular signal without functional benefit.

NADH (Reduced Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)

NADH is the reduced form of NAD+, a coenzyme essential to cellular energy metabolism. A small number of human trials have examined NADH for chronic fatigue; results are inconsistent and the evidence base is limited. NADH at oral doses used in supplements is subject to questions about bioavailability and systemic absorption.

HUMAN RCT Small trials in chronic fatigue; mixed results. Evidence for broader energy or cognitive benefits in healthy adults is not established.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is an acetylated form of L-carnitine involved in cellular energy metabolism. Carnitine participates in mitochondrial fatty-acid transport, while ALCAR has also been investigated in neurological and neuropathy-related clinical research. Human evidence varies substantially by indication, and evidence for general energy enhancement in healthy adults is limited.

Resveratrol, Quercetin, Vitamin C, Zinc, L-Ornithine

These supporting ingredients have varying evidence bases. Vitamin C and Zinc have established roles in antioxidant defense and immune function. Resveratrol and quercetin have substantial experimental research literatures and have also been evaluated in human studies, but clinical findings vary considerably by population, dose, formulation, and endpoint. L-Ornithine has been investigated in selected metabolic and fatigue-related contexts. These ingredient-specific findings do not establish mitochondrial or clinical benefit for the finished Mito Cell PQQ™ formula.

What Has — and Has Not — Been Established

  • Established: CoQ10’s role in mitochondrial electron transport and its randomized evidence in chronic heart failure. PQQ’s preclinical mitochondrial-biogenesis signaling mechanisms. Vitamin C and Zinc’s roles in antioxidant and immune biology.
  • Preliminary / early-stage: PQQ’s effects on human cognition (one small trial, PMID: 26782228). A PGC-1α molecular signal from PQQ in one human exercise RCT (PMID: 31860387) without functional performance benefit.
  • Not established: That oral PQQ creates new mitochondria in humans. That the combination of these ingredients produces greater benefit than individual ingredients studied separately. Clinical evidence for the finished Mito Cell PQQ™ formula itself has not been published; the formula has not been studied as a combination in a controlled trial.

Who May Consider Discussing Mito Cell PQQ?

  • Adults interested in a multi-ingredient mitochondrial support formula who want to discuss the evidence for its components with a pharmacist before starting.
  • Adults taking statin medications who are experiencing muscle symptoms and want to discuss the evidence for CoQ10 supplementation with their pharmacist or prescriber.
  • Adults interested in the early PQQ cognition and mitochondrial signaling research who prefer a combination formula over individual supplements.

Patients with significant medical conditions, cardiovascular disease, cancer, or those taking prescription medications (particularly warfarin, antihypertensives, or chemotherapy) should discuss with their pharmacist or prescriber before use.

Safety & Medication Considerations

  • Warfarin: Case reports have suggested that CoQ10 may reduce warfarin’s anticoagulant effect, although controlled evidence is limited. Because changes in anticoagulation could be clinically important, patients taking warfarin should discuss this formula with their anticoagulation provider and have INR monitored when appropriate after starting or stopping supplementation.
  • Blood pressure medications: CoQ10 has been studied for possible blood-pressure effects, though findings are inconsistent. Review with your prescriber if you are on antihypertensives.
  • Statins: Statins deplete CoQ10 via the mevalonate pathway. CoQ10 in this formula may be relevant for statin users; discuss with your pharmacist.
  • Chemotherapy: Antioxidant supplements including CoQ10 and Vitamin C may theoretically interact with oxidative chemotherapy regimens. Consult your oncology team before use during active cancer treatment.
  • PQQ: No clinically significant drug interactions established at studied doses (20mg/day). Generally well-tolerated in short-term trials.

Pharmacist’s Note

As a PharmD, I discuss Mito Cell PQQ™ with patients who are looking for a multi-ingredient mitochondrial support formula and prefer the convenience of a single capsule over separate supplements. CoQ10 is the ingredient in this formula with the strongest human clinical evidence base. PQQ is an early-stage compound with interesting preclinical mechanisms and small early human trials, but I am careful to present it as investigational in terms of established clinical outcomes. I do not represent the combination as having demonstrated synergistic benefit — no controlled trial has studied this finished formula. I always review a patient’s full medication list before recommending it, particularly for patients on warfarin, antihypertensives, statins, or active cancer treatment.
