What Is Fucoidan?
Fucoidan is a naturally occurring sulfated polysaccharide found primarily in brown seaweed. It has been consumed for centuries in Okinawa, Japan — a region famous for its extraordinary longevity and low rates of chronic disease. Modern science has now validated what traditional cultures long understood: fucoidan is one of nature's most powerful immune-modulating compounds.
With thousands of peer-reviewed studies published in scientific literature — including research indexed in PubMed spanning immune modulation, anti-tumor activity, and antioxidant properties — fucoidan is among the most researched marine-derived bioactive compounds in the world.
What Is AHCC®?
AHCC® (Active Hexose Correlated Compound) is a proprietary extract derived from the mycelia of shiitake mushrooms. It has been studied extensively in Japan and the United States for its ability to support natural killer (NK) cell activity — a critical component of the innate immune system.
AHCC® is used in over 700 hospitals and clinics in Japan and has been the subject of more than 30 human clinical trials.
The Science Behind NatureMedic® Fucoidan + AHCC®
NatureMedic® combines two of the most clinically studied immune compounds into a single, synergistic formula. Key research findings include:
- Immune modulation: Fucoidan has been shown to activate macrophages, NK cells, and dendritic cells — key players in the body's first line of defense.
- Anti-inflammatory properties: Multiple studies demonstrate fucoidan's ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines without suppressing immune function.
- NK cell enhancement: AHCC® has been shown in published research to significantly enhance NK cell activity — with some studies reporting increases of 300% or more in specific patient populations (Ghoneum M, et al., 1995; Terakawa N, et al., 2008).
- HPV support: A University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center study found AHCC® supplementation helped clear persistent HPV infections in a significant percentage of participants.
- Antioxidant activity: Fucoidan exhibits potent free-radical scavenging activity, protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Why Okinawan Fucoidan?
Not all fucoidan is equal. NatureMedic® sources its fucoidan from Okinawa's pristine coastal waters, where Mozuku seaweed (Cladosiphon okamuranus) is harvested under strict quality controls. Okinawan fucoidan has a higher molecular weight and sulfation rate compared to other species, which research suggests correlates with greater biological activity.
Who Should Consider NatureMedic® Fucoidan AHCC®?
- Individuals seeking comprehensive immune system support
- Those undergoing medical treatments that may affect immune function
- Adults over 50 with naturally declining immune surveillance
- Anyone looking for evidence-based, pharmaceutical-grade immune supplementation
