The Flowflex® Plus 4-in-1 (manufactured by ACON Laboratories) is a lateral-flow antigen rapid test that simultaneously screens for:
- SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)
- Influenza A (Flu A)
- Influenza B (Flu B)
- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
Results are available quickly from a single anterior nasal swab — no lab, no prescription, no appointment required. When used with ACON's proprietary nasal swab guard, the test is cleared for infants as young as 6 months when administered by an adult.
How It Works: The Science Behind the Strip
Lateral-flow antigen tests use antibodies bound to labeled particles on a test strip. When your nasal sample is applied:
- Viral proteins (antigens) in the sample bind to specific antibodies on the strip.
- If an antigen is present, a visible colored line appears at its designated zone on the test card.
- Each of the four viruses has its own dedicated detection zone, so you receive an individual positive or negative result for each pathogen simultaneously.
The test also includes a built-in procedural control line to confirm the test ran correctly.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds.
- Gather components: test card, swab (with swab guard for infants), extraction tube, reagent drops, and the tube holder/stand.
- Prepare the extraction tube: Add the specified number of extraction reagent drops into the tube as directed in the package insert.
- Collect the sample: Insert the swab approximately ¾ inch (1–1.5 cm) into one nostril. Rotate gently against the nasal wall 5 times. Repeat in the other nostril using the same swab. For infants, use the provided nasal swab guard and have an adult administer.
- Process the sample: Place the swab into the extraction tube and rotate/squeeze 10 times. Remove the swab while squeezing the tube sides. Cap the tube tightly.
- Apply sample: Invert the capped tube and add 3 drops into the sample well on the test card.
- Wait for results: Read results at the time indicated in the package insert. Do not read after 20 minutes.
- Dispose safely: Seal used components in the kit bag and discard in household trash. Do not flush.

What should I do after a positive result?
